PE Plastics: Processing & Uses
PE plastic is one of the most produced and used plastics in the world. Many of the plastic bags and plastic bottles we usually use are made of it. According to different molecular structures and characteristics, PE plastics are mainly divided into HDPE (high-density polyethylene), LDPE (low-density polyethylene) and LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene).
Each PE plastic has its own "specialties", such as some are strong and durable, and some are soft and flexible. These characteristics determine that they are suitable for processing into various products in different ways.
Injection molding is the process of heating and melting PE plastic particles in the barrel, pushing them through the screw, injecting them into the closed mold cavity through the nozzle, and obtaining plastic products after cooling and solidification.
HDPE has good rigidity, strength and chemical corrosion resistance, making it an ideal material for injection molding. In intermittent production, the injection molding machine can flexibly adjust the mold, which is suitable for the manufacture of small batches and multiple varieties of products, such as fuel tanks and water tanks in automotive parts, household trash cans and storage boxes, etc.
Continuous production relies on automated production lines, which are often used in large-scale production of daily necessities, such as plastic cups, tableware, etc., greatly improving production efficiency. Although LDPE is relatively rarely used in injection molding, its good flexibility and transparency make it also play a role in the manufacture of some products with high requirements for appearance and feel, such as toys and small stationery.
Extrusion molding is a process in which PE plastic is heated and melted, and then continuously extruded through a die of a specific shape under screw extrusion.
Both HDPE and LDPE are widely used in the field of extrusion. When HDPE is used for pipe extrusion, it is widely used in the manufacture of water pipes, drainage pipes, gas pipes, etc. due to its high strength and resistance to environmental stress cracking, providing protection for urban infrastructure construction; in terms of blow molding and cast film extrusion, it can produce industrial packaging films, agricultural greenhouse films, etc., to meet the needs of packaging and covering materials in different fields; cable material extrusion uses its insulation properties to provide a safe and reliable insulation layer for power transmission and signal conduction.
LDPE also occupies an important position in the extrusion process, especially in blown film and cast film extrusion. Due to its excellent flexibility, transparency and heat sealing properties, it is often used to produce food packaging film, cling film, shopping bags and other daily necessities, playing a key role in ensuring food safety and convenient life. At the same time, LDPE can also be used to extrude pipes, such as some soft pipes and hoses with lower requirements.
Blow molding is a method of placing the heated and softened PE parison in the mold cavity, expanding it with compressed air to fit the inner wall of the mold, and obtaining a hollow plastic product after cooling.
HDPE is often used to manufacture large hollow containers, such as chemical barrels, water storage tanks, etc., and can withstand heavy liquids and harsh environments due to its high strength and corrosion resistance. In blow molding, LDPE can be used to make small hollow products, such as cosmetic bottles, pharmaceutical packaging bottles, etc., using its good flexibility and transparency to improve the product appearance and user experience.
In addition, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is also commonly used in blow molding processes. It has both the strength of HDPE and the flexibility of LDPE, making the performance of blow-molded products more balanced.
Rotational molding, also known as rotational molding, is to add PE plastic powder into a mold, and the mold slowly rotates along two mutually perpendicular axes in a heating furnace to evenly coat the plastic powder on the inner wall of the mold. After heating, melting, cooling and shaping, the product is obtained.
Both HDPE and LDPE are suitable for rotational molding. HDPE can be used to manufacture large outdoor products, such as trash cans, amusement facility parts, etc. These products need to have high strength and durability. LDPE is often used to make some small, complex products, such as children's toys, handicrafts, etc., using its good moldability and color expression to enrich product varieties.
